About This Product
Refractive index is one of the most important optical properties of a gem, and because every kind of gem has its own characteristic value, the measured reading helps determine the type of stone. This refractometer can also measure the index of double refraction, from which a gem can be judged uniaxial or biaxial, and optically positive or negative. Lustre can be estimated from the same reading. It is used in laboratories, in gemology and in the jewellery trade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What range does the Gemological Refractometer measure?
It measures refractive index from 1.30 to 1.81 nD, with a scale division and accuracy of 0.01 nD.
Q2. What powers the refractometer?
It runs on 3 x 1.5 V button batteries. The internal LED illumination is operated with a momentary switch.
Q3. Can it measure double refraction?
Yes. Besides refractive index it can measure the index of double refraction, which helps judge whether a gem is uniaxial or biaxial.
